In the heart of George Town, Penang, the Goddess of Mercy Temple becomes a stage for spiritual transformation during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. In this photo series, a spirit medium believed to be possessed by a deity sits in ceremonial trance, receiving offerings from devotees. The ritual unfolds with rhythmic head movements and emotional cries from supporters, creating a powerful atmosphere of reverence and connection. The temple’s vibrant red and gold decor, paired with the presence of Guanyin iconography, reflects the fusion of Taoist and Buddhist traditions that define Penang’s religious landscape.

This ceremony, held in late September 2017, exemplifies the living heritage of Chinese folk religion in Malaysia.
